Silverstone Classic

July is dominated by Wimbledon, Henley rowing and the British GP; but the event making the most progress appears to be Silverstone’s Classic meeting with the three-day event attracting a record 80,000 plus crowd.

They are drawn by a heady mix of racing and rock n’roll, but for us it is the lure of the massive infield displays as over 700 clubs highlight the best of members' stock.

Aside from E-type’s hyped 50th, BMW celebrated the 75th birthday of their pre-war 328, and we are in the 50th year of MG Midget's 1961 debut as a squared-off edition of Austin Healey 1958 Sprite as well.

We joined the crowds on Sunday with the Sprite and Osborne’s big lenses. No press tickets for us, just pay for a discount club entry ticket for two and — like the record E-type crowd — we were allowed a couple of parade laps around the new GP circuit in company with Corvettes, cloned Lancia Stratos (Stratii?), big brother Healeys and literally hundreds of others.

It was a uniquely educational and enthralling experience, affordably priced and blessed by strong sunshine.

Oh, and the racing was pretty spectacular too. Recommended

Fantastic classic racing.
We couldn't understand why so many drivers in this race were sent to see the headmaster after ignoring the black flag. Could it be that the finish line, where the flag was displayed, is too close to the exit from the last corner?
Walton loved this little Sebring Sprite hunting amongst the big boys...
