Duxford Spring Air Display 2009
Nostalgic star of the show was Sally B, the only airworthy B17 Flying Fortress still flying in Europe. Sally B had a feature role in the hit movie Memphis Belle, hence the differing artwork on either side of the fuselage.

Sally B is based at Duxford but is owned and operated by the B17 Charitable Trust which relys on donations from the public to keep this magnificent aircraft flying.

Due to major engine problems, this was the first time for two years that Sally B had taken to the air at a show. It was certainly a tremendously evocative sight — and sound.

Other evocative sights and sounds at Duxford came courtesy of:
Spitfire duo - possibly THE iconic WW2 image.
The Spitfire in the background is owned and operated by The Old Flying Machine Co. (see HERE) founded by ex-Red Arrows team leader Ray Hanna.

North American B25 'Mitchell' bomber, complete with D-Day invasion stripes, makes a low pass over Duxford airfield.
Chance-Vought F4E 'Corsair'. This aircraft, in British Pacific Fleet 1945-1946 colours, is part of the Imperial War Museum Duxford collection.
Consolidated PBY-5A 'Catalina' amphibian. This Catalina saw WW2 service with the RCAF and was later used for fire-fighting duties in both Canada and Europe. Currently operated by Plane Sailing (see HERE)
Bang up to date..
Eurofighter Typhoon. The RAF's latest multi-role aircraft which is also in service with the air forces of five other nations, and currently on active service with the RAF over Libya.

This particular aircraft flew in from RAF Coningsby to perform a noisy, if rather less than soul-stirring, display under darkening skies.

Interesting to think that the cost of just one of these machines could probably have bought the whole of the RAF in 1940.

And something completely different..
The awesomely skillful Glider FX display team. Flying aerobatics in a glider while towed, while the little German-designed Twister (look at that iconic Spitfire-type wing profile) flies with and around them, just has to be seen to be believed.
