Austin Healey (Frogeye) Sprite Mk. 1 (Part 1)

Our 2010 project car is a 1958 Austin Healey Sprite, usually known as a Frogeye in UK and Bugeye for the USA. Bought from Rawles Motorsport outside Alton in Hampshire in March 2010, the little white terror came with a smartly retrimmed green interior and has already demanded a replacement engine!
A blow-by-blow story is is currently appearing in UK monthly magazine Classic Cars For Sale, and our first account is seen here (I hope!).
Our pretty pictures show the Sprite during the sunny running-in period, whilst the details include the interior as supplied (yes, the gear lever knob has now been replaced!) and the original (red) exchange engine, which was fitted with oversize carburettors and tubular exhaust manifold worth at least 5 more horsepower. Since Sprout started with just 43 showroom horses, we need all the extra we can get, although the light weight (less than a later model Lotus Elise!) did deliver over 85 mph and 37-38 mpg before the rebuild.

In 12 years ownership and a total approaching some 156,000 miles, these are some of the pictorial waypoints for Helga, Jeremy’s 1985 BMW 635CSi. Here are the first motor and front steering rebuild in 1997 through to Classic tours in 2007 France and 2004 Spain (wind turbines make a wonderful background). Today the BMW wears 17 inch BBS wheels and Conti Contact 2/3 tyres replacing the original metric 15.4-inch Michelin TRX wheels and rubber. Less attractive are the breakdown truck interludes and almost constant bodywork repairs which saw running costs just below and above £3000 in 2008-09.

Austin Healey (Frogeye) Sprite Mk. 1 (Part 2)

AFTER THE MOTOR DISASTER, A MORE ENERGETIC SPROUT PARPS OUT & ABOUT...

It was May 2010 and 49 days after motor meltdown, before Sprite was ready to collect from Mike Rolls MG, after the expenditure of more than £2000. As a nosey owner/journalist, I had visited the 52-year old patient regularly. Aside from the primary motor tasks, other issues needed resolving.....
